Fabric

230
GSM · Heavyweight · range 200–260
Poly-viscose suiting — 63% polyester / 34% viscose / 3% elastane. Piece-dyed, calendered; the polyester content is what holds the pleat through washing — do not let this be value-engineered down
Trim: Waistband fusible · 100% polyester knit fusible · 90 GSM

How it's made

Waistband
Straight fused waistband, cut on grain, closed at centre back · height: 4 cm · closure: 50 cm centre-back invisible zip with a hook and bar at the waistband
Pleats
12 knife pleats, all facing the wearer's left, folded to 4 cm at the waist and released at the hip. Pleats are edge-stitched down 20 cm from the waist seam so the hip stays flat
Shoulder
N/a shoulder
Sleeve hem
n/a
Body hem
3 cm turned hem, twin-needle, pressed with the pleats. Level; hem after the pleats are set, never before
Pockets
None. A pocket bag distorts a pleat and there is nowhere to hide it
Side seams
French seam, pressed toward the back so it disappears into a pleat fold
Stitch density spi
12 stitches per inch

Trims & notes

• 50 cm invisible zip (centre back)
• Skirt hook and bar
• Knit fusible (waistband)
• Woven label (inside waistband)
• Care/content label
• Pleats must be heat-set by the factory before the hem goes in, not pressed by hand at the end. Ask for a pleat-set sample after three home washes before approving the run.
• The 20 cm stitch-down is what stops the skirt reading as a school uniform. Shorter and it flares at the hip; longer and it will not walk.
• Grade the length by 1.5 cm only. Skirt length grades far less than waist, and a proportional grade makes XXL read as a maxi.
• This needs more fabric than it looks: 12 pleats at 4 cm of take-up each is roughly 2.2x the finished sweep. Cost it at 2.6 m per garment, not 1.2 m.
• Specify the pleat direction. 'Knife pleats' without a direction comes back with half the run facing each way.
